Adif invests €210 million in extensive modernization of Spain’s railway infrastructure
06.08.2024
The Spanish state-owned company Adif will allocate nearly €210 million for the modernization of the single-track line Zafra — Huelva (Iberian gauge, 1668 mm wide), spanning 180 km., this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The project includes upgrading five sections with a total length of 90.5 km.

Rails weighing 60 kg/m, concrete sleepers, and ballast will be installed.
Several stations will see the replacement of switches, changes to track layouts, and reinforcement of slopes in adjacent areas.
Additionally, pedestrian crossings will be repaired, drainage systems upgraded, and five bridges in the province of Huelva will be reconstructed, necessitating the dismantling of railway tracks.
Special attention is given to two bridges in the protected area of a bird sanctuary. Work here will be halted during the breeding season of black storks and black vultures.
The project involves the implementation of new signaling, traffic control, and communication systems.
Electrical and fiber-optic cables will be laid, replacing the telephone communication method with automatic block signaling centralized in Seville.
On the line sections, there will be passage signals, track circuits, and axle counters, and stations will be equipped with microprocessor centralization systems.
Additionally, the automatic warning signaling at 13 level crossings will be modernized.
To ensure voice communication between locomotive crews and the dispatch center in both passenger and freight operations, a GSM‑R standard radio communication network will be deployed. These measures will remove speed restrictions on 14 sections of the line.
The project is partially funded by the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan from the EU’s NextGenerationEU fund.
This investment aims to significantly improve Spain’s railway infrastructure and enhance its efficiency.
