Accident on the Dutch railway
13.04.2023
The cause of the tragic accident that occurred in the Netherlands has been identified. The construction crane involved in the fatal accident ended up on the tracks earlier than agreed, according to ProRail’s Dutch infrastructure manager. Railway Supply magazine writes about this with reference to RailFreight.
As a result, the DB Cargo NL train collided with a crane and, as a result, the passenger train derailed, bumping into its wreckage. As a result of the accident, the crane operator died and about 20 people were injured. This supports ProRail’s claim that the freight train was on the right track at the time of impact.

The accident happened on April 4 in Vooschoten in the west of the Netherlands, very early in the morning. The accident involved a DB Cargo Nederland freight train, a BAM construction crane and an NS passenger train.
Work also began to clean up the accident site, despite being delayed due to high winds. According to ProRail, the freight train and crane were removed from the site between April 6 and 7. Cleanup operations are being carried out by Dutch company Mammoet, which will remove the passenger train, which was heavily damaged by the accident. ProRail added that they “cannot yet indicate how much time the hoisting activities will take”.
