The MTA temporarily shut down the line in January to carry out critical upgrades on the Broad Channel Bridge and to replace the deteriorating Hammels Wye viaduct over Jamaica Bay.

Along with the structural improvements, the agency installed advanced flood barriers and pumps in areas prone to high water. These additions aim to prevent damage like that seen during Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Infrastructure Upgrades Improve Rockaways Transit Reliability

The Broad Channel and Hammels Wye sections had long required renewal. The new viaduct replaces one nearly a century old, increasing durability and safety for daily train operations to and from the Rockaways.

Flood resilience also received attention. Transit workers reinforced the line with modern barriers and drainage systems to safeguard against future storm surges and minimize service disruptions.

While the A train was offline, residents used shuttle buses and discounted LIRR tickets. These temporary measures added delays for many commuters, especially those already traveling more than an hour each way.

Commuters Welcome the Return of A Train to Rockaways

Joseph Ebisan, who commutes from the Bronx to Far Rockaway, expressed relief. He called the train “super helpful” and said he was often late during the closure due to longer travel times.

The summer return is especially timely. According to city data, Rockaway Beach welcomed around 150,000 weekday visitors last June—many of whom depended on the A train for direct access.

By completing the upgrades on schedule, the MTA reinforces its commitment to maintaining resilient and efficient transportation links for the Rockaways community and seasonal visitors alike.
