The Chilean State Railways (EFE) unveiled the railbus Prosper VLT for the 88 km Talca–Constitución line, improving the quality of regional transport. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

A contract for the supply was signed with Brazilian company Marcopolo. The deal amounted to $15 million and was concluded in January 2023 as part of a line modernization program.

This route connects the Maule region in central Chile with the Pacific coast. It plays a vital role in the transport system and is popular among both residents and tourists.
Next-Generation Railbus for Chile
Prosper VLT features two carriages and accommodates 220 passengers, including 80 seated. It is equipped with air conditioning, USB ports, and a restroom, enhancing travel comfort.
Dual driving cabs enable operation in both directions. The new railbus meets modern standards and is designed for regular service along the challenging route.
The final unit is expected to arrive in Chile in May 2025. Until then, a series of tests and staff training sessions will be conducted.
When the Railbus Will Begin Operations?
Service launch is scheduled for September 2025. After tests and personnel preparation are complete, the trains will begin transporting passengers on a regular basis.
Prosper VLT will replace the outdated MAN Ferrostaal units, which have operated since 1962. Although these were declared a piece of national technical heritage in 2007, their age necessitates replacement.
The project also includes the construction of a depot in Talca. This will improve maintenance efficiency and ensure the consistent operation of the new rolling stock.
The new railbus will strengthen the region’s transport infrastructure, providing reliable connections between Chile’s central regions and its coastal areas.
