The Gateway Development Commission has awarded the Hudson Tunnel boring contract, valued at $1.3 billion. It covers the project package for tunnel boring beneath the Hudson River. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The work is known as Package 1C. According to Progressive Railroading, it was awarded to a joint venture. The partners are Traylor Bros. Inc., Walsh Group and Skanska AB.

Work under the package is expected to begin in the coming months. It covers the longest tunnel-boring section in the Hudson Tunnel project. The contractor will build two new tunnel tubes beneath the Hudson River. Each tube will be about 7,250 feet long. The tubes will run from Weehawken, New Jersey, to the west side of Manhattan. The work will use two new mixed-use tunnel boring machines.
Also, the contract includes nine cross passages linking the two tunnel tubes. In addition, it covers ground stabilization around part of the Hudson Bergen light-rail tracks. The new tunnel will pass under those tracks. Separately, the package includes a permanent underground support system. The system will strengthen a section of the Willow Avenue Bridge.
With this award, the GDC has now awarded six of the 10 construction packages. Those packages make up the Hudson Tunnel project.
“More than half of the construction packages that make up the project are now in progress or completed, and we have now awarded contracts for all the tunnel boring needed to build the new tunnel tubes,” GDC CEO Tom Prendergast said in a press release.
