AmeriStarRail has made an offer to replace Amfleet cars on the Amtrak Northeast Corridor. The project is still on the table but has already generated interest due to its emphasis on enhanced safety, increased speeds, and enhanced customer servicedefinitions.

The firm recommends financing the project from private investment without the involvement of federal subsidies. Its basis is the introduction of new Alstom Avelia Liberty trains—the same to be adopted by the NextGen Acela service.

AmeriStarRail recommends the new set to be named Amtrak Libertyliner 250 to be marking the United States’s 250th anniversary along with the 250 km/h top speed marking the new set.

The Amfleet Replacement Project Aims to Improve Safety

AmeriStarRail says that running 50-year-old Amfleet coaches at speeds between 125 mph is risky. Modernization is the way to go, the company feels, due to the fact that new technology ensures improved reliability and safer operations.

High-speed New York–Washington hourly service with travel time of 1 hour 59 minutes and high-speed Boston–New York–Washington city pair is included. Train frequencies between cities would be decreased to 30 minutes to raise efficiency and competitiveness of rail.

Replacing Amfleet Cars Will Expand Passenger Opportunities

Each Libertyliner 250 would be outfitted with three classes—coach, business, and first—so travel by high-speed could be available to students, family members, seniors, and the handicapped.

Sustainability is also highlighted by the project. Second-generation rail will be less energy-intensive and emit less CO₂ to sustain the U.S. transport industry’s environmental strategy.

Current Status and Amtrak’s Response

AmeriStarRail wrote to Amtrak President Roger Harris on July 28, 2025, proposing to examine the Libertyliner 250 partnership project at the board level. The corporate entity put forward the idea to study the risks of running old cars and the possibilities of modernization on the corridor.

As of October 2025, the project remains under consideration, and the company’s position has not yet been announced. According to Railway Supply, no information about Amtrak’s decision has appeared in the media.
