New South Wales will invest A$160 million in a Sydney Metro parking expansion that will add up to 1,200 commuter spaces at Tallawong and Hills Showground stations.

The NSW Government investment⁠ addresses two car parks that regularly reach capacity before 8 a.m., leaving some passengers unable to find a space close to the M1 Metro.

At Tallawong, a new multi-storey car park will provide up to 1,100 additional spaces. At Hills Showground, an extra level will be added to the existing multi-storey facility, creating up to 100 spaces.

Tallawong capacity could more than double

When Sydney Metro Northwest opened in 2019, Sydney Metro listed⁠ 1,000 commuter spaces at Tallawong and 600 at Hills Showground. If the maximum announced additions are delivered, those totals would rise to as many as 2,100 and 700 spaces respectively.

The larger Tallawong project is intended to support a rapidly growing catchment. The government says more than 50,000 homes are planned in the North-West Growth Area over the next 20 years, increasing the number of residents who may use metro services.

The Hills Showground extension is smaller, but it also targets a facility that regularly fills early in the morning. The project will add capacity without replacing the existing multi-storey car park.

Park&Ride access and project timeline

The new Hills Showground spaces will be integrated into Transport for NSW’s Park&Ride system⁠. Eligible commuters can receive up to 18 hours of free parking after completing a public transport journey with the same accepted card.

Premier Chris Minns said parking at both stations is regularly taken by 8 a.m. Transport Minister John Graham said the upgrades will form part of a wider review of improvements for metro users.

The funding announcement sets the investment and maximum number of additional spaces, but it does not provide procurement details, a construction start date or a completion timetable.
