STERIS Campus Targets 160 Rail Cars a Year by 2031

USA: STERIS plans to handle at least 160 rail cars annually at its future Sanford, North Carolina, campus by 2031, supported by up to $600,000 in NCRR rail infrastructure funding.

On-site rail will support a phased start-up

The North Carolina Railroad Company said its NCRR Invests grant will help fund the design and construction of on-site rail at STERIS’s planned 600,000-square-foot Chemistries Manufacturing Center of Excellence in Lee County. The wider industrial project represents more than $600 million in capital investment.

NCRR’s project announcement confirms the on-site rail scope but does not specify the number or length of tracks, loading facilities, switches, signals or other individual components. Its broader NCRR Invests program can support design and engineering, lead and siding track construction, rail loading facilities, signals, and track grading and drainage, but those eligible categories should not be read as a confirmed STERIS project specification.

Norfolk Southern is listed by NCRR among the partners supporting the development. However, the published announcement does not identify the operating arrangement for the STERIS site or describe the physical connection between the campus tracks and the surrounding freight network.

The 2031 target follows the expected opening window

STERIS says construction of the new campus will proceed in several phases and that the site is expected to become operational in two to three years, beginning with distribution. After the project is completed, the company expects to transition existing formulated-chemistries manufacturing and distribution work from St. Louis, Missouri, and Plymouth, Minnesota, to the North Carolina center.

That schedule places the 2031 rail-volume target after the expected initial opening period. NCRR says that once the facility is operational, STERIS will use the rail project to receive and distribute a minimum of 160 rail cars annually by 2031. Neither NCRR nor STERIS has published an annual rail-volume ramp-up between start-up and that target.

The rail commitment gives the project a measurable freight dimension alongside its manufacturing scale. The campus is planned to include advanced manufacturing, research and development, laboratory, warehouse and distribution operations. For rail suppliers and freight operators, the confirmed elements are the on-site rail investment and the 2031 minimum-volume target; the detailed track layout and service plan remain undisclosed.
