Like many travel and tourism companies, Amtrak offers discounts based on age or status. One of those options is its senior discount. The main questions are simple. Who qualifies, how much does it save, and where can it be used?

Amtrak senior discount eligibility and booking rules

According to Amtrak’s senior discount page, passengers aged 65 or older can receive a 10% discount. It applies to fares across almost all Amtrak routes in the United States. The rule also covers cross-border services operated jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada. Also, those trains use a lower senior age requirement of 60.

The discount is easy to apply during an online booking. In the passenger details section, travelers should change the passenger type from adult to senior. Once that option is selected, the 10% reduction is applied automatically to the fare shown. In practical terms, eligibility is handled through the passenger type selected at purchase. It does not require a separate railcard or pass. For tickets bought at a station, staff may ask for proof of age. That can include an ID or senior card.

It applies to the vast majority of services, rather than only to a short-term promotion. In addition, senior passengers can still use Amtrak Guest Rewards. Where the senior discount does not apply?
