Amtrak employee assault on delayed train ends in arrest

As reported by WLNS, Amtrak employee assault led to the arrest of a 32-year-old Dewitt man. Also, police said the disturbance happened on a delayed train.

Amtrak employee assault reported near Bellevue Township
Michigan State Police said troopers were dispatched to a stopped train. It was near Sand Road in Bellevue Township. As MSP First District noted, the call came at about 10:40 p.m. on Sunday, March 8. Meanwhile, a 911 caller reported that a combative passenger had assaulted two employees during the Amtrak train disruption.

Before troopers arrived, police said the man appeared to be intoxicated. In addition, police said he was upset about the delay. MSP said he began “running upon and down the train,” causing other passengers to fear for their safety.
Amtrak employees restrained intoxicated passenger with zip ties
According to police, two Amtrak employees tried to calm the passenger down. Still, the situation escalated. They told authorities he was “out of control” and yelling at other passengers. At the same time, the employees tried to isolate him from the other passengers. MSP said he assaulted them. They then restrained him with zip ties.
When troopers reached the scene, police said the suspect appeared to be “highly intoxicated”. Still, he remained upset about the train’s delay and the lack of a refund.
Dewitt man arrested after Michigan State Police response
The Dewitt man was arrested and taken to the Eaton County Jail. Separately, the Eaton County prosecutor authorized two counts of resisting and obstructing a police officer. Police said the Amtrak employees were invested with the powers of law enforcement. That was their status at the time of the incident.
