UP derailment damages Wichita bridge and closes I-135

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, two support columns were damaged. In addition, the columns support the highway bridge over UP’s rail yard. Also, one northbound lane had reopened by 8:30 p.m. CT. Meanwhile, bridge inspectors continued to assess the damage. Still, there was no timeline for a full reopening.

About 10 cars derailed, no injuries reported

Separately, Union Pacific told KSNW-TV that about 10 cars derailed. Also, no injuries were reported. At the same time, no hazardous materials were involved. “We are working closely with the Kansas Department of Transportation to determine next steps for repairing the bridge,” UP said in its statement.
