Plane Train modernization at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has moved into commercial operation, with Alstom and the airport introducing the first new-generation vehicles for the automated people mover before this summer’s World Cup.

Four Innovia APM R automated vehicles have now entered commercial service. Their introduction starts the renewal of the airport’s Plane Train fleet and forms part of a 63-vehicle order⁠ being produced by Alstom for the airport. The program is designed to update the system and respond to rising demand for internal transportation.

The fleet expansion is being carried out alongside infrastructure works that will allow more frequent train service and reduce wait times and crowding for passengers. The program has an immediate role in preparing for additional traffic linked to football matches in Atlanta, while also supporting the longer-term needs of the world’s busiest airport.

Plane Train modernization and fleet renewal

Alstom’s work with Atlanta airport on the Plane Train extends back more than 40 years. The company designed and installed the system 45 years ago and remains responsible for its operation and maintenance⁠.

The driverless people mover runs for about 4.5 km underground, linking seven boarding terminals with two main terminals. It operates continuously throughout the year and carried a record 95 million passengers in 2025.

The Innovia APM R vehicles are the third generation of the platform. They have been developed for integration into existing systems without requiring major infrastructure changes. Compared with earlier generations, the new vehicles offer quieter operation, improved energy efficiency, and lower maintenance costs. Passenger-facing upgrades include better lighting, modern information displays, and door safety systems with obstacle detection.

Production of the vehicles is taking place at Alstom’s facility in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania. After the full order has been delivered, the airport’s fleet will increase to 73 vehicles.

Infrastructure works reduce train intervals

Alstom has also completed several infrastructure modernization measures as the new trains are introduced. A new turnaround system enables trains to reverse direction without disrupting following services. This has reduced the minimum peak-period interval between trains from 107 seconds to 90 seconds.

When all vehicles are in place, Atlanta airport will be able to run up to 15 trains at the same time, compared with the current 10–11 trains. This will increase hourly transport capacity. The project also includes the modernization of 13 switches in the guidance system, which is intended to improve reliability and lower the risk of service disruptions.
