Norfolk Southern locomotive modernisation is advancing under a new agreement with Progress Rail. As reported by Railway-News, the plan covers 96 EMD SD70M-2 locomotives. They will be converted into SD70ICC units with AC traction technology.

SD70ICC conversion under the Progress Rail agreement

The company said three upgraded SD70ICC locomotives will be able to do the work now handled by four legacy SD70M-2 units. Also, that would let Norfolk Southern move the same tonnage with fewer locomotives. In addition, it would reduce overall fuel consumption. Meanwhile, it would also improve performance. Those operating gains were also outlined by Norfolk Southern.

AC traction technology and delivery timeline

Each rebuilt SD70ICC locomotive will include a remanufactured EMD 16-cylinder 710 engine. It is rated at 4,300 horsepower. Also, the units will receive updated control systems. In addition, they will receive Caterpillar Advanced Diesel Engine Management (ADEM). That package is intended to reduce unplanned downtime. Separately, it is intended to deliver fuel savings depending on duty cycle.

Norfolk Southern Vice President of Mechanical and Chief Mechanical Officer Brian Barr said:

These conversions are a tangible example of how we’re modernising our fleet to drive safe, reliable, and efficient operations for the long term.

By upgrading to AC traction, we’re strengthening network resilience, improving fuel efficiency, and extending the life of our assets — while giving our customers greater haulage capacity and the consistent service they need to support their own growth and sustainability goals.

Still, the delivery schedule remains the same. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027. At the same time, the programme is due to be completed by 2029.
