Massive Bank Holiday Engineering Projects Shut Down Key UK Rail Routes
03.05.2026
May bank holiday train travel will require advance checks for some passengers. Most of Britain’s rail network is expected to remain open. Planned engineering work is set to cause limited disruption overall. Still, services will be affected in several locations. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

May bank holiday train travel and affected routes
Several important worksites will affect services during the early May Bank Holiday, Network Rail says. On the East Coast Main Line in North Yorkshire, junction reconstruction at Tollerton will mean replacement buses run between York and Darlington from Saturday to Monday. A limited train service will also operate between Northallerton and Darlington.
Separately, a package of work under the Transpennine Route Upgrade will begin on Saturday. It will continue through much of May and June. The works cover the corridor between Manchester, Huddersfield and Leeds. They include overhead wires for electric trains, a new bridge, track improvements and station upgrades.
Liverpool Lime Street and London Euston service changes
Liverpool Lime Street will close on Sunday and Monday only. The closure will allow new signalling to be installed around Edge Hill. Meanwhile, track laying near Willesden and Primrose Hill will reduce services to and from London Euston. London Overground trains will not run between Euston and Kilburn High Road during the affected period. Normal services are due to resume on Tuesday.
Anit Chandarana, Network Rail’s group director, System Operator, commented: “There is no ‘right way’ to do major work on our railway, but bank holidays are still among the least busy times for us in terms of passenger numbers and freight services.
“Those extra days with fewer travellers give us an opportunity to do longer projects that we couldn’t do in a normal two-day weekend or overnight. So while most of our railway is open as usual over the bank holidays this May, there are some major exceptions and we also have two major projects getting underway in Yorkshire and between Newport and Bristol that passengers should be aware of.
“I’d advise everyone to plan ahead and check before they travel.”
