The accident occurred on Tuesday, April 4, in Vorschoten, between The Hague and Amsterdam. As a result of a collision with construction equipment, the front car derailed and drove into the field, the second one overturned. The resulting fire was quickly extinguished.

One person died on the spot. 19 people injured in the accident were taken to hospitals. Some of them are in critical condition. It is not known at this time if there are any other casualties.

The first reports spoke of a collision between passenger and freight trains. However, this information was quickly denied. At the time of the incident, there were about 50 passengers on the Leiden-The Hague train.

The train operations on the Leiden-Hague line has been suspended. A rescue operation is underway.
