KEVRZ needs immediate modernization

Experts of the Supreme Council of the Verkhovna Rada on Ukrzaliznytsia, after a visit to PJSC “Kiev Electric Locomotive Repair Plant”, stated that equipment for repairing 90% worn-out rolling stock is outdated, as are the trains themselves.

In the 21st century, a factory looks more like a manufactory than a mechanized production, informs Railway Supply magazine.

KEVRZ is the only enterprise in Ukraine capable of performing deep overhaul of electric trains. The plant’s management is faced with the task of restoring 85 sections (170 cars) by 2022.

However, due to the lack of a shareholder strategy, lack of adequate funding for the renewal of fixed assets, this plan is under threat.

“85 sections are a drop in the bucket for the railway of Ukraine,” says the head of the Temporary Investigative Commission of the Verkhovna Rada on Ukrzaliznytsia. After all, 61% of the total number of electric trains operated by Ukrzaliznytsia need immediate and deep overhaul. At least 600 of 927 are in poor technical condition. Some of them pose a real threat to passengers and technical staff. But fixing them soon can be a daunting task. “
