A brake shoe is a device to reduce speed or stop the uncoupled wagon groups. Shoes are also used to lock standing rolling stock from spontaneous and unauthorized movement. The shoes have to be marked with the inventory number and stored strictly in the designated places. Brake shoes are an inventory of special accounting.

The brake shoe is used as a brake on the humps of classification yards and for fixing the wagons on the station and rail-road siding.
