Trespass at Chalfont & Latimer on Saturday 3 October disrupted Chiltern Railways trains between Amersham and London Marylebone and halted Metropolitan line services north of Rickmansworth.

The National Rail Enquiries disruption notice gave 10:35 as the time the incident was reported. In its 10:40 version, the notice said trespass between Amersham and Chalfont & Latimer had blocked some lines. Chiltern Railways trains between Amersham and London Marylebone could be cancelled, revised or delayed by up to 30 minutes, and the disruption was expected to last until 11:30. The notice listed the affected route as Aylesbury Vale Parkway to London Marylebone.

The notice was later marked as resolved and the lines had reopened. Some trains between Amersham and London Marylebone could still be cancelled, revised or delayed by up to 30 minutes, with disruption expected until 12:00.

National Rail Enquiries told passengers whose journeys were delayed that they may be entitled to compensation, and advised them to keep their tickets and a note of the journey to support a claim.

Under the Chiltern Railways Delay Repay 15 scheme, a delay of 15–29 minutes pays back a quarter of a single fare, and a delay of 30–59 minutes pays back half.

Chiltern Railways Delay Repay 15 compensation by length of delay
Length of delay Single ticket Return ticket Season ticket
0–14 minutes No compensation No compensation No compensation
15–29 minutes 25% of the ticket price 12.5% of the ticket price 25% of the journey value
30–59 minutes 50% of the ticket price 25% of the ticket price 50% of the journey value
60–119 minutes 100% of the ticket price 50% of the ticket price 100% of the journey value
120 minutes or more 100% of the ticket price 100% of the ticket price 100% of the return journey value

Season ticket compensation is worked out from the value of a single journey covered by the ticket. Chiltern Railways says claims must be made within 28 days of travel, that it does not consider claims for delays on services run by other operators, and that compensation applies where the delay was caused by something within the rail industry’s control. Metropolitan line suspension between Rickmansworth and Amersham

A status update from Transport for London (TfL) that morning showed no Metropolitan line service between Rickmansworth and Amersham or Chesham while it dealt with a trespasser on the line at Chalfont & Latimer. London Buses accepted valid tickets on any reasonable route. Separately, TfL reported severe delays between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Uxbridge during a track inspection at Eastcote.

Chiltern trains on London Underground track

Chiltern Railways trains on the route to Aylesbury via Amersham run over London Underground track between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Amersham, the stretch that includes Chalfont & Latimer. Work on that track has stopped Chiltern services before. London Underground track maintenance left no Chiltern trains between London and Aylesbury Vale Parkway via Amersham over the 2–4 May 2026 bank holiday weekend, as Chiltern Railways travel advice for that weekend set out. Replacement buses then linked Amersham and the stations towards Aylesbury Vale Parkway with trains at Beaconsfield.

Trespass on the railway and train delays

Network Rail guidance on trespass says stepping onto the track or the land beside it is dangerous and illegal, and anyone caught can be prosecuted and face a £1,000 fine. Trains can only run again once the railway has been made safe, and the resulting delays can spread to trains elsewhere on the network, sometimes for hours.
