Buranda Station mural vote: how to vote and when it closes

Queensland Rail has shortlisted five designs. The finalists are:

  • Aurora Campbell
  • Yannick Blattner
  • Joel Fergie (The Zookeeper)
  • Fintan Magee
  • Fuzeillear

Voting is open until 5pm on 22 February. People can vote via QR codes on posters in and around Buranda station. They can also vote online through the Queensland Rail website, as noted in Queensland Rail’s media release.

Queensland Rail Urban Art Coordinator Daniel Brock said choosing a winner was difficult. Each concept celebrates the local area in its own way. So the community is being asked to help decide.

Shortlisted designs for Buranda Station public art mural

Daniel Brock said Fintan Magee’s concept uses a series of framed “windows”. It uses glass, light and reflection to explore space and movement. It also draws on the history of Stones Corner.

Aurora Campbell’s design reflects time spent sketching at the local pub. It also draws on sketching around Buranda station and walks along Norman Creek. Meanwhile, Fuzeillear’s concept reflects the traditional meaning of Buranda as the “windy place”.

Joel Fergie (The Zookeeper) proposes a stylised banksia landscape. It shows people and nature together. Yannick Blattner’s design incorporates scenes of summer activity. It also includes flowing water, movement and connection. Daniel Brock congratulated all five finalists on their “beautiful and thoughtful” pieces.

Positive pARTnerships program and Buranda Station upgrade Brisbane

The project forms part of Queensland Rail’s Positive pARTnerships program. The program works with local artists to deliver public art that beautifies stations and builds community pride and ownership. Details are also shared on Queensland Rail’s Buranda station mural page.

Across the Queensland Rail network, the program has delivered more than 200 projects. It covers about 27,000 square metres on station buildings, subways, sound barriers and other infrastructure.

Buranda station was recently upgraded to improve accessibility and safety for passengers. The Buranda Station upgrade Brisbane includes a footbridge with lift access. It also includes full-length high-level platforms and accessible bathrooms.
