Banned items on Queensland trains remain a safety concern for Queensland Rail. Also, the operator released footage of unusual objects passengers tried to bring onboard. These included lawnmowers and a chainsaw, as Rail Express reported.

Banned items on Queensland trains and onboard rules

Across the network, more than 400 banned items were reported last year. Also, Queensland Rail said oversized or unsafe items can create serious safety issues.

Queensland Rail General Manager Security and Emergency Preparedness Drew Brock said most people follow the rules. Still, a small number bring items that can cause disruption, discomfort or danger. “Most customers do the right thing, but we continue to see a small number bringing items that can cause disruption, discomfort or even danger,” he said.

Passengers are being advised not to bring large objects. These items must fit under a seat or in a designated area. In addition, Queensland Rail said only assistance animals are permitted onboard.

Bikes and e scooters on trains

The operator said bikes and e scooters must stay in the first and last carriages of six-car trains. For example, Queensland Rail guidance reflects that rule. At the same time, aisles, doorways and priority seating areas must remain clear.

Queensland Rail security teams and network monitoring

Security across the network is supported by Authorised Officers, Mobile Security Dog units and nightly Guardian Train services. Meanwhile, the Rail Management Centre provides round-the-clock monitoring. It also has access to more than 12,000 CCTV cameras. Separately, Queensland Rail works closely with the Queensland Police Service Railway Squad. Also, 98 officers provide a “visible presence” on the network.
